What is the core difference between Dovetail and UpSight?

Comparison, with Dovetail details last checked 2026-09-25. Dovetail is built for enterprise research and product organizations and sells two plans, Free and Enterprise. UpSight is built for founders, product leads and consultants at teams of one to ten, and publishes its prices.

Dovetail organizes customer feedback around projects and channels. Feedback flows in from sales calls, support tickets, surveys and research sessions through 38 native integrations plus an API, MCP and CLI tools. AI features (AI Projects, AI Channels, AI Dashboards, AI Chat, AI Docs, AI Agents and the new Digital Twins) analyze it, and the paid tier is Enterprise with custom pricing, redaction and compliance controls. Its named customers include Atlassian, Canva, Zapier, AWS, Okta and Qantas.

UpSight organizes customer evidence around people and decisions. You upload the calls, interviews and surveys you already have. Analytical lenses read each one several ways (sales, discovery, jobs-to-be-done, decision), every finding is pinned to the timestamp in the recording, and each person keeps a profile that grows with every conversation. Plans are $0, $29 a month, and $39 per user a month, published on the site.

In short: Dovetail is the enterprise system of record for customer feedback. UpSight is the evidence engine for a small team that has to decide something this week.

What does Dovetail cost, and what does UpSight cost?

As of 2026-09-25 Dovetail’s pricing page lists two plans: Free, at $0 with one channel, one project, chat on that project, basic AI summaries and one dashboard; and Enterprise, with custom pricing, everything unlimited, redaction, compliance controls and dedicated support. No plan sits between them and no per-seat price is published. Getting a number means a sales conversation.

UpSight publishes three: Free at $0 forever, Pro at $29 a month for one user with unlimited AI analysis and the full MCP server, and Team at $39 per user a month with a two-seat minimum, where your CEO, sales lead and designers view evidence without paying for a seat. A single Pro user pays $348 a year. Current figures are on the pricing page.

If you can fit inside Dovetail’s Free plan, it is a genuinely capable product at no cost. The question is what happens the month you need a second project, a second channel, or an agent.

Who should choose Dovetail?

  • You have a research or insights team of five or more that needs shared taxonomies, governance and a single system of record across the company.
  • Enterprise procurement is normal for you: SSO, redaction, compliance controls, net-30 invoicing and a dedicated success contact are requirements.
  • Your feedback already lives in many systems and the 38 native integrations are the point.
  • You are standardizing an organization on one customer-intelligence platform, and the vendor’s customer list (Atlassian, Canva, Zapier, AWS, Okta, Qantas) is part of the decision.

Dovetail has earned its position. If that list describes you, it is probably the right choice.

Who should choose UpSight?

  • You are a founder, product lead or consultant at a team of one to ten who talks to customers weekly and is still deciding from memory.
  • You need the answer with the receipt: when someone asks “where did that come from?” you want to click and play the moment, not point at a tag.
  • You already have the customer evidence. UpSight starts there, not with a new research program.
  • You want surveys and conversations in one evidence base, so what people say in interviews can be checked against what they report in a form.
  • You want your AI assistant to query your customer evidence directly. The MCP server ships on every plan.
  • You want a published price you can decide on today without a sales call.

Looking for a Dovetail alternative?

Most people searching for a Dovetail alternative fall into one of three groups.

  1. Priced out of the paid path. Dovetail’s only paid plan is Enterprise. If you need more than one project or channel and don’t have an enterprise budget, UpSight Pro at $29 a month is the direct comparison.
  2. Don’t need a repository. You aren’t running a research program. You have calls and need decisions. UpSight’s lenses and receipts are built for that job. See customer call analysis.
  3. Consultants. You need eight stakeholder interviews to become a defensible recommendation by Friday, with evidence a client can challenge. See customer discovery for consultants.

Other tools people compare with Dovetail include Looppanel, Condens, Notably and Marvin. Each is a research repository first. If a repository is what you need, compare those. If a decision is what you need, try UpSight on the evidence you already have and check the receipts.

The verdict

These are different tools for different contexts. Dovetail is the enterprise customer intelligence platform: mature, integrated, governed, priced by conversation. UpSight is customer intelligence for a small team that has to decide something: lenses, receipts, people profiles, surveys, an MCP server, and a price on the website.

The question is not which has more features. It is which one fits the way you actually work, and what you can afford to find out.

Frequently asked questions

Good evidence gets argued away, dropped between meetings, or swallowed by the next busy task.

I built UpSight because customer truth was still getting lost after teams did the hard part — talking to customers, collecting the feedback, bringing the voice into the room.

UpSight keeps the voice, the source, and the next move together, so a team can act before the signal disappears.
